Guide to Valkyr ranks

Alpha and Alphess: Pack Leaders, mated pair. Have final say over ranks and acceptance to the pack. Audition or Challenge ONLY.

*Sub-Alpha: Female or male appointed directly by the alphas to be their advisor and second-in-command. If the Alphas die and the heir is not of age, the sub-alpha assumes command. The sub-alpha also leads the pack if the alpha must go away. OPTIONAL, appointed by alphas ONLY.

*Heir: Pup chosen from a litter by the alphas to inherit one of their positions when of age, which is around three years. OPTIONAL, decided by alphas ONLY. Need not be pup of the alphas.

Beta and Betess: Second in command, mated pair. May accept members to the pack. Third in line to step in for the alphas if the heir is not of age. Appointed by alphas.

Captain: Male or Female. Has command of Sentinels, Spies and Warriors, defers to the ranks above them. Usually a proven fighter with very good knowledge of strategy, may be trusted with command above even Betas or the Sub-Alpha during a battle if the Alpha believes they have superior knowledge and skills. Appointed by alphas. May take on an apprentice at their own discretion – no one else may appoint the captain’s apprentice, not even the alphas.


*Captain’s Apprentice: A youth taken on by the captain for training. May succeed Captain with approval of alphas, or go on to a different rank.

**Member: General members of the pack. Once accepted, the Captain or Alpha will assign them to one of the following sub-ranks:

**Sentinel: Guard to the pack and alphas, these wolves are charged with keeping watch over the dens as well as patrolling borders. They are usually incredibly loyal individuals who are capable fighters. The sentinels are hand chosen from the youths and members by the Captain, and are often the first line of defense should a pack come under attack.

**Warrior: Soldier of the pack, under the command of the Alphas, Captain, and Sentinels. These wolves are usually capable fighters.

**Spy: Wolves who are selected by the Alphas or Captain to carry out reconnaissance missions undercover in order to gain information, attempt assassinations, or other cloak-and-dagger activities. These wolves are usually very skilled at acting, and are often plain in appearance as to not attract attention.

**Hunter: Wolves entrusted with hunting for the pack and assisting the Warriors and Scouts with daily duties.

Healer: A wolf knowledgeable in herbs, sicknesses, or injuries, tasked with tending to the medical needs of the pack. Especially important during battle.

Elders: Wolves who have served the pack and now retire with honor - Omegas and Slaves cannot become Elders.

Apprentices: Youths in training to be a combatant or healer.

Pups: Members to young to hold any other rank.

Omegas: Rankless wolves, often abused, usually tasked with menial jobs.

Slaves: Captive loners caught trespassing, prisoners of war, or wolves who have proved themselves even lower than the omegas.

*Indicates a rank which is optional and given out at the alpha's discretion.
**Indicates a general rank you may ask for in your character application, no audition needed, although alphas (and Captain, where applicable) still have the final say.
