STOCK INFORMATION
okay, since some people seem to have a problem telling copyright images from stock images, i'm going to give a go at explaining. this goes for everyone on the site. it's sad i have to explain this to an intermediate-advanced lot but there you go. the world is baffling. i feel i need to post this to drive this home to everyone because i hate when people mess this up. so i'm giving a guide. i used it on my site and edited it a bit to make it less 'im god rawr' since i was admin. i think everyone should know how to find good stock.
stock my dear pretties, is something you can and should use. it's usually under creative commons, where if you credit the person you got it from all is well. very few stock pictures can be used without credit, and even if they can you should always give credit where it's due.
*photography is not stock. it is in no way a basic image than can be turned into something epic. it is art already. artists whose photos are used without permission get pissed. their followers get pissed. and guess where they go with all that pissed? straight to us to whine and then we have to deal with it. so, control yourself. if the Deviantart category is photography, go find some stock.
*drawings are not for your use. unless you drew it, and you can link to your Deviantart page and prove that it was your art, or you have your signature at the bottom. i'd rather see photomanipulations [ made from stock, with credits ] because it makes it sure you're being legit.
* exceptions to these is if you get the artist's consent to use the image.PLACES
where to we find stock? you ask. well, there are key locations you can get stock from.
deviantart is not my main source because all the rules, but you can find good stock. i will lay out the plan. so your sitting on Deviantart's front page, wanting some wolf stock. you type in wolf to the search bar. loads of pictures pop up and your excited because there is just the snazziest looking wolf right there. STOP. these are not to be used. it may turn out that the wolf is stock, but it probably isn't. so, go look at the categories. holy mother of god. it says 'resources&stock image'. hot damn, don't know why you missed it before, right? click it. you'll see your search results have been cut in half and pictures appear, not drawings. you click 'stock images' next, and there you go. BUT WAIT. since it's Deviantart, once you find a picture, you just can't go off and use it. if the artist comments don't have the rules listed and say 'go read them rules in my journal, kays?' or something like that, do it. and then follow them. cus you know what? people get pissy if you just use there stuff.
flickr.com is where i get most of my things. you know, it's a great gallery for every type of stock ever, without the sticky rules of Deviantart. but you students, not every single picture on there is stock! most of it is photography. want to know how you weed out the BS you can't use? type in a search. say you didn't find anything cool on Deviantart. you type in wolf here too. everything imaginable pops up and you start hyperventilating cus you see the perfect one. sorry love, not stock. go to 'advanced search'. scroll all the way down. when you see Creative Commons license, check the box. now check the box that says 'can be modified or adapted'. now hit search. dear kittens, we have business. you can use any one of those images to make something!
that's all i know because i don't feel like using something else.NO - NO
okay, there are few places you never want to look, kay? and if i see something from here i'll just shake my head at your thievery.
photobucket is the worse place ever. if you search for crap on there it's all stolen. most people do not actually upload drawings onto that site. and if it's a manipulation, well you just need to die. because that is someone else's work you just stole, for another person's character. if you get stock, it's bootleg. totally stolen. unless you have your copyright on that photobucket image along with the copyright to where you got it, i don't know if you stole it or not, you hear?
google is not a stock search! google is not credited to taking those pictures. it doesn't make sense to even try and say 'i got it from google'. this is because google takes your right to the website it's actually on. and those people don't want you to use their images! if you took a picture it was you best ever and you didn't want to see it messed up and you found out some 12 year old stole it and put neon pink bubble glitter text on it, you'd be pissed, right? cus i would. so do not search here.
other freaking search engines. comcast, yahoo, google, ask.com, or any of the others do not own the images, they showcase them.
I HAVE A DREAM
if you have an image, don't use it unless you are absolutely sure it's stock. for shops or to ask people to make your images, do not give them copyright pictures, pictures you've found on google, another search engine, goes against all these rules i've just said. if you're going to give a picture make it usable. that's what we're asking. if not, just leave it blank. i go searching for stock all the time so it's not that big of a deal.
i would honestly like to see every single image on this site with a copyright. blah blah, it's a hassle. okay, 5 minutes in GIMP/Photoshop. not even. just use the smallest text [ if you don't have cool ones, Verdana on 9 is good ]. type something along the lines of "image to -your name- ;; original image to -the person- of Deviantart/Flickr" do not say 'Deviantart', nor should you say 'Flickr.' Give the artist some respect and post their name. this goes into action now.
and to see if people read all the way down here i want to say avvies are the exception. usually, they are too small for credits. as long as the image is small and the picture is stock, i simple don't think anyone will care.
